Syracuse Football Recruiting: Resetting the WR Position

Looking at why Syracuse is re-focusing at recruiting wide receivers...

Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Just a few weeks ago I wrote about the Wide Receiver position and that we would be done for this class, and probably only take one in the 2016 class. This was after KJ Williams didn't qualify. But then Corey Cooper decided to transfer, and suddenly, the staff decided that maybe this is a position that could use some strengthening in the next class. Enter two new WR offers:

Steven Claude and Spencer Tears both received offers from the staff on the same day, and the Orange should be able to enter into the fray for both.

Claude is currently a Wake Forest commit, but plays at Champagnat Catholic (FL) with his cousin, Syracuse commit Gerald Robinson. Obviously the two are quite close which could tempt Claude into flipping his commitment. At minimum I'd expect an official visit from Claude when Robinson comes back up to Syracuse. He also has offers from Duke, Louisville, Rutgers, Utah, WVU, and a host of other mid-majors.

Tears is from Syracuse's newest pipeline state, Illinois. He was committed to Nebraska before he decided to reopen his recruitment and the Orange decided to throw their hat in the ring. He also has offers from Purdue, Indiana, Louisville, and another large group of mid-majors.

Both of these guys fit the stereotype for what Scott Shafer is searching for. They're both tall, athletic WRs and should fit the system quite well. However, these two offers appear to signify the end for former commit KJ Williams, whose non-qualification was definitely a shock. I could see the Orange taking both receivers if the chips fell properly but I think it's more likely the Orange end up with just one of the two.
