Name: Chauncey Scissum
Position: Free Safety
Year: Redshirt Freshman
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 205
Hometown: West Henrietta, NY
High School: Rush-Henrietta
2013 Stats: He didn't play, so nothing to report here.
2014 Projections: Last season, Shafer had him at cornerback partly because he finds that it teaches young players to control their speed. After a year of that, Scissum is slated to play at safety, which is where Shafer has envisioned that his size and body type will be utilized. He's only behind Darius Kelly on the depth chart, so seeing the field isn't out of the question this year.
How'd He Get Here: Originally committed to Old Dominion, he changed his mind and decided on Syracuse after Shafer took over as head coach and started recruiting him.
What'd Recruiting Sites Say: Three stars from everyone except Rivals, which gave him two.
Money Quote: He thinks highly of the other Syracuse defensive backs:
They all fly around to the ball. They're all headhunters. They're trying to get the ball back and give it to the offense in a good situation.
Links Of Wonder: In high school, Scissum played lacrosse and ran track in addition to playing football. And he was pretty darn good at it, too.
Twitterfeed: @Proto_21
Tweets Of Wonder: Yes. Do this.
Might have to start watching orange is the new black

What Does Shafer Think Of Him: On his potential at the safety position:
Chauncey, he's got the body type. He's got a big head, big hands, high hips. He's going to be a big kid someday. I like him because he's bright, got a good skill set, and I'm looking forward to seeing his physicality this spring, see if he can get that mindset to be a physical safety for us.
Interesting Nugget O'Interest: Remember how I said he played lacrosse in high school? Apparently, he's thought about continuing his career at SU. We'll have to keep an eye out to see if that happens!
Let's Get A Good Look Atcha:
