A year ago this weekend, I was in Atlanta for the Syracuse Orange's unexpected run to the 2013 Final Four.
A year later, I'm home wondering if I'm even going to watch the Final Four. I've got a lawn to mow, you know?
There's been a lot of gruff directed at Jim Boeheim in a recent days over his comments & thoughts about Tyler Ennis & Jerami Grant going pro. I actually find that stuff more annoying than anything.
What does frustrate me, however, is the barrage of negative feedback surrounding Boeheim from those inside the Syracuse fan base. You know what I'm talking about. The online comments, tweets and Facebook posts going on and on about what a terrible coach he is. How Syracuse should have ten Final Fours under his watch. How "every year" we lose to a double-seed in the early rounds. How it's time for him to be fired and let's get a real coach in here.
You're allowed to think what you want, but, it frustrates me because I think back to a year ago when Jim Boeheim coached a team that should have made it to the Final Four into the Final Four.
Last year.
365 days, give or take.
It's a shame that so many fans are so fickle, so quick to turn on those they support. You can argue that this year's team should have gone further (I guess Boeheim was supposed to make all those shots for them?) and you can argue that previous incarnations should have made the Final Four (Boeheim was supposed to hold Arinze Onuaku's leg together as he played?). But the truth is, he DID get a team to the Final Four. LAST YEAR.
Anyway, I'm not sure when this site became Jim Boeheim Is An Absolute Peach(™) but every time I think back to the 2013 Final Four, and I think about what a fantastic job Jim Boeheim did with that team, I just get riled up all over again with every email I receive telling me to get my head out of my ass and start realizing that Boeheim is a garbage coach.
"What person in the world makes that kind of money without having to come through and get results, Boeheim and high level drug dealers, that’s who. Only in America."
That's from an email I received last week from a disgruntled SU fan. There's a ton more where that came from and all of it boils down to the idea that Jim Boeheim never wins and never gets it done.
Except that he did. Literally a year ago. Chill the f*** out.
