The Syracuse Orange women's lacrosse programs has reached some mighty highs ever since Gary Gait took over the program. He's taken the team to multiple Final Fours, seen them through a lot of impressive victories and now they can add one more accolade to the mix. A regular-season No. 1 ranking.
Syracuse is ranked No. 1 in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll released on Monday, April 14. It marks the first time the Orange has been atop the poll during the regular season in program history. Syracuse moved up one spot to No. 2 in this week's Brine media poll.
Despite the win over previous-No. 1 North Carolina over the weekend, it seemed unlikely the Orange could jump up to the top spot given that the team in-between them were the Maryland Terrapins, who defeated the Orange earlier in the year. However, it looks like the coaches were willing to take what's happened since into account. Maryland is No. 1 in the media poll, though SU did receive three of the nine first-place votes.
Syracuse now puts its No. 1 ranking on the line when they travel to Ithaca, N.Y. to take on Cornell on Tuesday, April 15 at 7 p.m.
