The Syracuse Orange women's basketball team found themselves in unfamiliar territory on Wednesday. Having received a bye in their first-ever ACC Tournament, the 5-seed Orange had to wait until the 13-seed Clemson Tigers defeated the 12-seed Virginia Tech Hokies to know who their opponent would be on Thursday.
Turns out they were prepared nevertheless.
After a shaky first half in which the Orange got zero points from Brittney Sykes or Brianna Butler, both players and the team got their act together in the second half en route to a 63-53 victory. SU will now take on the 4-seed N.C. State Woldpack in the ACCWT Quarterfinals, Friday at 11.00 a.m. (Brackets here).
Sykes led the Orange with 10 points while Butler, Rachel Coffey and La'Shay Taft all added nine in a balanced scoring effort. Briana Day grabbed eight rebounds to lead SU in that category.
The Orange lost a close one at Raleigh 67-61 in their first-ever ACC contest. They'll look to get some vengeance as well as add to their NCAAT resume tomorrow.
