Clemson News: Shakin The Southland

Rivalry: 0-2

Streak: 2, Clemson (duh)

First Meeting: The first meeting between the two schools was the 1960-61 season opener. Clemson won 78-67 at the Midwest Invitational in Kent, OH. Clemson Hall of Famer Choppy Patterson led the Tigers in that game with 23 points while Syracuse was led by Pete Chudy (19 points).

Last Meeting: Eric Devendorf scored 23 points while Demetris Nichols scored 20 points in his final game as the Orange fell to Clemson 74-70 in the 2007 NIT Elite Eight.

School Connections: Jerami Grant older brother Jerai ('07-'11) was a member of the All-ACC Defensive Team as a senior and ranks sixth in Clemson history with 197 career blocked shots. Jerai and Jerami’s uncle, Horace, was the 1987 ACC Player of the Year for Clemson.

Head Coaches: SU: Jim Boeheim (38th Year, 942-314); Clemson: Brad Brownell (4th Year, 66-51)

Last Year: Clemson finished the season 13–18, 5–13 in ACC play to finish in 11th place. They lost in the first round of the ACC Tournament to Florida State and that was that.

Last Game: Star K.J. McDaniels struggled, but Clemson's defense halted the Yellow Jackets to help the Tigers slug out a 45-41 victory.

Head Coach Bio: Prior to coming to Clemson as head coach, he held the same position at Wright St. and UNC-Wilmington. He took the former to two NCAA Tournaments and won 20-games in every season with the latter. His Clemson teams have gotten a little worse than the previous one but it looks like he's finally got it figured out this season.

"Fear Me, I've Killed Hundreds Of Timelords": K.J. McDaniels, who is the leading scorer (16.3 PPG) and rebounder (7.0 RPG) for the Tigers. He's also the ACC’s leading shot-blocker at 2.6 per game this season

If Syracuse Wins…: They will lock up their second-straight week as the No. 1 team in the nation.

If Syracuse Loses…: That Virginia game might be the deciding factor in who the No. 1 seed will be in the ACC Tournament.

Fun Fact: Only four schools have defeated Syracuse in football and men’s basketball in the Carrier Dome in the same academic year since it first opened in the fall of 1980 (BC, Miami, Cincy & Pitt). With a win, Clemson could become the fifth.

Fun Fact 2: This is actually Clemson’s second game in the Carrier Dome. In 1990-91, they took on Seton Hall in the ACC-Big East Challenge. The Pirates won 78-62 in Syracuse.
