Notre Dame News: One Foot Down
Odds: -14, Syracuse
Rivalry: 25-19, Syracuse
Streak: 1, Syracuse
First Meeting: The 1913-1914 Orangemen were a stout bunch. Ed Dollar's group went 12-0 on the year. Along the way they invited Notre Dame over and promptly trounced them 50-14. Lew Castle led the way with 20 points.
Last Meeting: No. 9 Syracuse ended a two-game skid with a decisive 63-47 win over the No. 25 Irish last February. C.J. Fair scored 18 and grabbed ten boards while Jerami Grant scored 14.
School Connections: Both schools were members of the Big East Conference (for basketball, anyway) before both becoming members of the ACC (for basketball, anyway).
Head Coaches: SU: Jim Boeheim (38th Year, 941-314); Notre Dame: Mike Brey (14th Year, 297-152)
Last Year: Notre Dame finished the season ranked No .23 with 23-8 (11-7) record. They made it to the Big East Tournament semis before losing to eventual BET and National Champ Louisville. As a 7-seed in the NCAA Tournament, they lost to 10-seed Iowa State in the Second Round, 76-58.
Last Game: Losers of three in a row, the Irish were in deep trouble headed into overtime against lowly BC. But, Eric Atkins hit a game-winning three with one second on the clock and the Irish ended their skid with a 76-73 overtime win.
Head Coach Bio: After finishing up his playing career at George Washington, Brey immediately became an assistant at DeMatha High School in Maryland. He was hired by Coach K at Duke in 1987 as an assistant and stayed there until 1995 when he took over at Delaware. After a great run that included two NCAA Tourney appearance, he took over at Notre Dame in 2000. His Irish teams have never missed the post-season, going to nine NCAAs, though only making it as far as the Sweet Sixteen once. Brey is 6-13 all-time against Syracuse and his Irish squads are 2-7 at SU.
"Fear Me, I've Killed Hundreds Of Timelords": Garrick Sherman leads the team with 14.5 PPG but Eric Atkins is probably the most dangerous guy where Syracuse is concerned. He averages 14.3 PPG and he also hoists a bunch of three-pointers. If he's hot, expect to hear a lot about him. Also keep an eye on Pat Connaughton, Notre Dame's requisite "white guy who just shoots threes all day." If anyone's gonna go lights out against SU, it's probably him.
If Syracuse Wins…: The Orange will have avenged that loss to ND while No. 1 a few years back and also solidified their spot at top dog once more.
If Syracuse Loses…: The "Curse Of Playing Notre Dame While Ranked No. 1" will be a real and true thing.
Fun Fact: As noted everywhere, the last time Syracuse was No. 1, the team that dethroned them was the Irish.
Fun Fact 2: Syracuse has won 18 of the last 23 against Notre Dame, lest anyone think ND has our number, or anything.
