Rivalry: 3-1, Syracuse
Streak: 3, Syracuse
First Meeting: In the 1984 Sweet Sixteen, the 3-seed Orangemen got off to a terrible start against the 7-seed Cavaliers and never really recovered. They shot 27% in the first half and the Cavs cruised to a 63-55 victory en route to their Final Four appearance.
Last Meeting: Jonny Flynn and Andy Rautins each scored 15 points and Syracuse completed a home-and-home sweep of Virginia, 73-70, in 2008.
Head Coaches: SU: Jim Boeheim (38th Year, 946-316); Virginia: Tony Bennett (5th Year: 100-58)
Last Year: Virginia finished the season 23–12, 11–7 in ACC play. They lost in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals to NC State. They received an invitation to the NIT where they defeated Norfolk State and St. John's to advance to the quarterfinals before losing to Iowa.
Last Game: Trap game, schmap game. The Cavs cruised with a 65-40 beatdown of Miami. 25-point wins? What are those?
Head Coach Bio: A player for Wisconsin-Green Bay, Bennett got his start as an assistant with Wisconsin before moving on to Washington State where he worked his way up from assistant to head coach in 2006. He took the Cougs to the NCAAs twice and was named Coach of the Year in 2007. In 2009 he was hired away by Virginia and has slowly but surely rebuilt the program from a 15-16 first season to two consecutive post-season appearances (and a third on the way).
"Fear Me, I've Killed Hundreds Of Timelords": Malcolm Brogdon (12.4 PPG) and Joe Harris (11.5 PPG) lead what is a pretty level (if not overly active) offensive attack. Along with them, Justin Anderson, Anthony Gill and Akil Mitchell love shooting threes. A lot. So…that sounds fun...
If Syracuse Wins…: They'll be back in the driver's seat for the top seed in the ACCT.
If Syracuse Loses…: That'll make it three in four games. Not a good look.
Fun Fact: Virginia fans will be doing a WhiteOut. That usually works out pretty well for us. They're now doing an OrangeOut. Yes, an OrangeOut. Against Syracuse. The Syracuse Orange.
Fun Fact 2: Don't forget that Syracuse plays Virginia in lacrosse immediately following the game...
