Syracuse 17 - Albany 16: Enough With The Heart-Attack Victories, SU

You can thank Henry Schoonmaker for making sure things SU went home happy.

Syracuse Orange Athletics is going to be the death of us all.

The SU football team ended its season with back-to-back, last-second victories. The men's basketball team has now pulled two-straight wins from the jaws of defeat. Now the men's lacrosse team is getting in on that action by going into overtime with the Albany Great Danes and winning, 17-16.

Even with the late emergence of Lyle, Miles and Ty Thompson, No. 2 Syracuse (2-0) held off No. 11 Albany (0-1), 17-16, in the Carrier Dome. Randy Staats netted five goals and spearheaded an SU attack that went toe to toe with the Great Danes’ high-octane offense.

But Albany made it interesting. Trailing 16-11 with 10:43 left, the Great Danes rattled off five unanswered to force overtime, but then came Schoonmaker’s bouncer, the first shot of overtime.

It's the second-straight year this game went to extra periods (Albany won in 2OT last time). You can thank Henry Schoonmaker for making sure things went the other way this time...

Albany is no pushover (No. 10 in the polls) so consider this the first of many tests on SU's schedule.

Now 2-0, the Orange have until next Saturday when the briefly-ACC rival Maryland Terrapins come to town.
