Syracuse Orange fans will always have a special place in their heart for Mr. Shut It Down himself, Rob Murphy. The former SU assistant and current head coach of the Eastern Michigan Eagles, Murphy was just one of those guys you wanted to root for no matter what.
I suppose we figured out a way, as Syracuse, to screw even that up.
Murphy's Eagles pulled off a solid upset Tuesday night, beating the Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor, 45-42. It's a signature win for Murphy's program and their first win over UM since 1997.
The loss also sends the Wolverines into a tailspin as it's their second-straight loss to a team that most certainly should have beaten. Michigan was coming off their stunning loss to NJIT just a few days earlier.
That brings us to Syracuse. The Orange factor in here because the last team Michigan defeated before losing at home to a MAC squad and a team that doesn't even have a conference was...drumroll...us.
Michigan beat us and then lost to NJIT and Eastern Michigan.
That's frickin' horrible.
We're gonna need some time to process all of this. Is Michigan really this terrible? Does that mean Syracuse is really, really terrible? Or did Michigan just crap out at the wrong time before righting the ship later on? And will that mean Syracuse losing to them isn't as bad as it looks right now? We probably won't know those answers for a while yet.
So, kudos to you, Coach Murph. But...man...you couldn't have beaten Michigan State instead?
