Duke BlogDuke Basketball Report

Rivalry2-0, Duke

Current Streak: 2, Duke (duh)

First Meeting: In 1938, the seventh-ranked and undefeated Iron Dukes came to Syracuse and shut out Ossie Solem’s Orange, 21-0, at Archbold Stadium.

Last Meeting: In 1939, Syracuse lost in Durham, 33-6, to the 13th-ranked Blue Devils. George McAfee scored three touchdowns for the Blue Devils.

Head Coaches: SU: Scott Shafer (2nd Year, 10-12), Duke: David Cutcliffe (7th Year, 38-45)

Curious Connections: Orange TE PJ Batten and Duke WR Terrence Alls both attended Miami’s Dade Christian School.. Syracuse CB Juwan Dowels, TE Tyler Provo and Duke DT Edgar Cerenord all played at American Heritage in Miami.

Last Year: One of the best seasons in the history of Duke football (I know...), the Blue Devils won the ACC Coastal Division and went into the ACC Championship Game with a record of 10-2. Despite a good effort, they got beat by eventual champs Florida State in that one and then lost a 52-48 barnburner at the Citrus Chick-Fil-A Bowl to Texas A&M.

Last Game: The Pittsburgh Panthers gave it everything they had but the Blue Devils outlasted them in double overtime, 51-48. Somehow, Duke finds a way...

"Fear Me, I've Killed Hundreds of Timelords": WR Jamison Crowder is second in ACC history with 247 career receptions. He had nine catches for 165 yards and two scores at Pitt.

If Syracuse Wins: The chance to play a 6-6 MAC school in Detroit in mid-December lives another day!

If Syracuse Loses: Well, at least they can pump the brakes on the indoor practice facility. Won't need it until April, guys...

Fun Fact: An interesting note about the 1938 game. At the time there was a so-called gentlemen’s agreement that saw Northern teams bench black players when facing Southern opponents. Duke coach Wallace Wade accepted the presence of Syracuse QB Wilmeth Sidat-Singh, who was African-American and held out of the Orange’s game at Maryland the previous year, saying "If he doesn’t play, no matter what the score is, we’ll get no credit for winning."
