Laura Hurff, a freshman midfielder on Syracuse's field hockey team, was named the Corvias ECAC Rookie of the Week on Wednesday. On Tuesday, she received ACC Player of the Week honors.
In two games this past weekend, Hurff scored three goals, including two on Saturday against then-No. 5 Louisville, helping the Orange get a much-needed 3-1 win. Not only was the win Syracuse's first in ACC play but, as I wrote on Monday, it was really the team's first signature victory in a 2014 season that has seen the Orange lose tough games to North Carolina, Boston College, and Virginia.
The freshman tallied her third goal of the weekend on Sunday, when Syracuse cruised to an easy 5-0 road win against Cornell.
Hurff, who graduated in June from Ursuline Academy in Newark, Delaware, went goal-less in Syracuse's first nine games this season. Since then, however, she has scored four goals in four games -- all four of which the Orange won.
Hurff next takes the field this Saturday when, like the football team, she and her teammates battle the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in Winston-Salem, N.C.
