The breadth of Shafer's importance to the Syracuse program is demonstrated by the desire of MacPherson and Loeb, two offensive players, to step forward and lobby on Shafer's behalf. They've witnessed his unique ability to motivate and nurture through years of watching the Syracuse defense "run through brick walls for him" on the field.
At a press conference on Saturday to preview Syracuse's season-opener with Penn State, Shafer shared more of his philosophy on his team and the game of football overall while discussing the upcoming game with the Nittany Lions.
The 5 things that Syracuse learned on its four-game trip to Canada | syracuse.com
"Overall, this has been a great trip and been a really good experience for our players,'' Boeheim said after the final game on the tour Saturday night. "This will help us.''
"Yeah, we're a bowl team," he emphatically declared. "We're preparing to win. We're ready to win. We'll win enough games to get to a bowl. We'll take care of that. We'll cross the bridges when we come to them. We'll take care of Penn State when we get them. We'll take care of the ACC when we get there. I'm pretty sure we're going to do a good job."
Syracuse University Athletics - Men Rank 1st in USTFCCCA Preseason Poll
The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches association announced its regional preseason poll for the 2013 cross country season. The SU men's team ranked first and the women's team ranked fifth in the Northeast Region.
Syracuse University Athletics - Orange Receiver Hill Sidelined by Injury
Syracuse receiver Macauley Hill sustained a lower body injury which will require surgery. As a result of the surgery and rehabilitation process, Hill will not return for the 2013 season. Hill joined the Syracuse team as a walk-on prior to the 2011 season and earned a spot on the 2012 Fall Athletic Director's Honor Roll. In May, Hill, who is majoring in child and family studies, and teammate Sam Rodgers participated in a Mission trip to Haiti to assist with projects and work with children at an orphanage.
Syracuse University Athletics - Shafer Praises Senior Leadership
"I love our senior class and I love our captains," Shafer said in his weekly exclusive Orange All Access Interview. "I've seen our captains really take the team over and our senior class has helped them with it. There is strength in numbers and we have a really large senior class. It's a group of kids that's really committed to find ways to win games. That's probably the one thing that excites me the most about this team."
"I think both of those kids are primed to help us continue forward as we get into this week," Shafer said, "and have a good season and understand their role."
Joseph, the Montreal native, said in a recent interview that China was his preferred professional basketball destination because of the shortness of the Chinese season, the amount of money he could make during that five-month span and his ability to get back to the United States in time for a late-season attempt to make an NBA roster.
6-6 seems to be the popular pick.
Adding to the intrigue are a pair of trips McDonald took this summer, one to California and the other to Georgia, to spend time with a pair of NFL coaching staffs and at least one top-notch college staff. For a week he sat in with the San Francisco 49ers and Atlanta Falcons, absorbing as much as he could from two of the best teams in the NFL. With access to their film room and certain team meetings, McDonald, a self-described "football junkie," was in paradise as he stored away any information that might help Syracuse upon his return.
Naturally, no one in State College is saying who will start, but those are the two untested options. Of course, O’Brien’s credibility as a Belichick acolyte hasn’t hurt his chances of luring talented quarterbacks. Next comes the cycle of developing them as a head coach.

Syracuse University Athletics - Passing the Torch
Heading into the 2013 season Syracuse field hockey has a core group of returners, but one rather important position has a vacancy. After goalie Leann Stiver's four-year career came to an end due to graduation last season, the SU is looking to sophomore Jess Jecko to fill the void.

"It used to be that I'd get a tweet or two right after a game ended, asking when the T-shirt e-mail was coming," Keeley said. "Now, I get 10 tweets asking that with 10 minutes left in the game. Syracuse fans are so used to getting e-mails offering them a T-shirt that they half-expect to see one following every commercial break. And when that e-mail finally does arrive, we all share the news and just shake our heads."
