At a press conference on Saturday to preview Syracuse's season-opener with Penn State, Shafer shared more of his philosophy on his team and the game of football overall while discussing the upcoming game with the Nittany Lions.

"Overall, this has been a great trip and been a really good experience for our players,'' Boeheim said after the final game on the tour Saturday night. "This will help us.''

The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches association announced its regional preseason poll for the 2013 cross country season. The SU men's team ranked first and the women's team ranked fifth in the Northeast Region.

Syracuse University Athletics - Orange Receiver Hill Sidelined by Injury

Syracuse receiver Macauley Hill sustained a lower body injury which will require surgery. As a result of the surgery and rehabilitation process, Hill will not return for the 2013 season. Hill joined the Syracuse team as a walk-on prior to the 2011 season and earned a spot on the 2012 Fall Athletic Director's Honor Roll. In May, Hill, who is majoring in child and family studies, and teammate Sam Rodgers participated in a Mission trip to Haiti to assist with projects and work with children at an orphanage.

"I love our senior class and I love our captains," Shafer said in his weekly exclusive Orange All Access Interview. "I've seen our captains really take the team over and our senior class has helped them with it. There is strength in numbers and we have a really large senior class. It's a group of kids that's really committed to find ways to win games. That's probably the one thing that excites me the most about this team."

"I think both of those kids are primed to help us continue forward as we get into this week," Shafer said, "and have a good season and understand their role."

Adding to the intrigue are a pair of trips McDonald took this summer, one to California and the other to Georgia, to spend time with a pair of NFL coaching staffs and at least one top-notch college staff. For a week he sat in with the San Francisco 49ers and Atlanta Falcons, absorbing as much as he could from two of the best teams in the NFL. With access to their film room and certain team meetings, McDonald, a self-described "football junkie," was in paradise as he stored away any information that might help Syracuse upon his return.
