Syracuse RB Jerome Smith On 2013 Maxwell Award Watch List

Nice to see Syracuse Orange running back Jerome Smith in the same company as college football's elite players on the 2013 Maxwell Award watch list.

Mark Konezny-US PRESSWIRE

There are names you expect to see when discussing the award given to the best player in college football. Johnny Manziel. A.J. McCarron. Jadeveon Clowney.

Nice to see Syracuse Orange running back Jerome Smith in the same company, if even just for a massive watch list for the 2013 Maxwell Award.

Smith is among the many, many...many college football players named to the watch list before the season begins. That list will get trimmed down in late October. Given the award's propensity for rewarding quarterbacks, it's unlikely we'll see Smith make the cut. But hey, nice to be included.

Smith might just be one of the best players in the country flying under the radar. I've seen multiple people talk about how there are no dominant running backs in the ACC this year, and yet Smith is coming off a 1,171-yard season (fifth-best ever for SU) that included four-consecutive games in which he ran for over 115 yards. As discussed before, if he keeps it up, he has the chance to go down in the SU history books...which is saying something when it comes to our RB history.
