We're in the middle of the 90's and that means we're making the rounds on the defensive line.
Name: Robert Welsh
Position: Defensive End
Year: Junior
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 256
Hometown: Bay Shore, NY
High School: St. Anthony's
2012 Stats: Welsh saw action in every game last season off the bench. He recorded four tackles.
2013 Projections: As of this very moment, Welsh is penciled in as a starter at defensive end, alongside DT Jay Bromley and NT Eric Crume. He's the smallest of the three and he probably would have been on the 2nd team had Markus Pierce-Brewster not been kicked off the team, so he's got something to prove in the eyes of Orange fans. He's also got a very curious back-up behind him, former TE Ron Thompson.
How'd He Get Here?: After a solid career playing football and basketball at St. Anthony's, Welsh chose the orange helmets over offers from New Hampshire and Hofstra. Suck on it, Wayne Chrebet.
What'd Scout/Rivals Say?: Rivals pegged him as a two-star player though Scout gave him a solid three.
Money Quote: "Coach Marrone told me they're going to put me wherever the team needs me." Marrone's not here anymore but we like the attitude.
Links of Wonder: Doug Marrone was really big on Welsh and apparently took personal interest in his recruitment.
Tweets of Wonder: As far as I can tell, Rob's not on Twitter. I didn't know SU football players could still do that.
What Does Shafer Think: Nothing specific. But...hardnosed thoughts, I'm sure.
Interesting Nugget O'Interest: Welsh also played on the St. Anthony's basketball team. I know that's not interesting, but, sometimes you work with what you got.
Let Us Get a Good Look Atchya: Check out this fun picture of Welsh leading the team on the field. He looks so happy!
