...And we're back! The Get To Know Your Orange Man series is officially underway for the summer.
Name: Josh Manley
Position: Defensive Line
Year: Freshman (Redshirt)
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 269
Hometown: College Park, Ga.
High School: Milton
2012 Stats: Josh redshirted last year, so 2013 will be his first time seeing the field for the Orange.
2013 Projections: Josh is in the mix for starting defensive tackle and defensive end jobs, respectively. At the tackle position, it's likely Iowa transfer John Raymon takes that open spot, especially given the size discrepancy between the two players (Ramon is three inches taller and outweighs Manley by nearly 60 pounds). The two defensive end positions have a slightly more open competition between Manley, Robert Welsh, Micah Robinson, Ron Thompson and Lucas Albrecht. Starter or not, he'll probably get significant playing time as part of a deep rotation across the line.
How'd He Get Here?: As Matt informed us last year, Josh was courted by fellow ACC schools Georgia Tech, Boston College, NC State, Virginia and Wake Forest, plus Louisville (future ACC), Mississippi State, Missouri, Purdue and Stanford. Maybe the selling point for him was seeing his name on a Syracuse building already? Let's go with that.
What'd Scout/Rivals Say?: Scout said 2 Stars for Manley, who's already gained 24 pounds (of muscle, I'd like to believe) since graduating high school. Rivals said 3 Stars, which sounds more right to me, and should look more right to you, too.
Money Quote: When Keepin' It Real Goes Right:
"I wanted to take the visits because my cousin went through some bad stuff during his recruiting process a couple years ago. I didn’t want to do that, I wanted to make sure (I made the right choice). I stuck with Syracuse because they were constant with me, it was never on and off. All the coaches kept it real with me no matter what. I never lost contact with them and ultimately when I visited Syracuse I didn’t want to leave."
Links of Wonder: Manley and a few of his Georgia compatriots would probably not be wearing Orange right now if not for the move to the ACC. Thanks again, Swoff Dawg!
What Does Shafer Think: Those dirtbags at Missouri tried to steal Josh away from his rightful destiny at the last second in 2012. Luckily, FHCDM and Scott Shafer went down to Georgia to save the day.
Interesting Nugget O'Interest: Josh's claim to fame is his Super Bowl-winning uncle, Dexter Manley. Manley played in the NFL from 1981 through 1991, winning two championships with the Washington Redskins, while also suiting up for the then-Phoenix Cardinals and Tampa Bay Buccaneers later in his career as well. Dexter also played for the CFL's Ottawa Roughriders, was named to the 1986 Pro Bowl, and tallied 97.5 sacks on his career.
Let Us Get a Good Look Atchya: Here are some highlights from Josh's prep team, the Milton High School Panthers, facing off against the Fort Walton Beach Vikings back in fall of 2011. Not a ton of Josh here, but you'll see him as #75 in white here and there.
