Syracuse Football: Orange Open as Five-Point Underdogs Against Penn State

The 2013 college football season's first point spreads are out, with 5dimes listing Syracuse as a five-point underdog in its opener versus Penn State

USA TODAY Sports

It's still very very early, but betting service 5Dimes has released early point spreads on the opening weekend of the 2013 college football season. Of particular interest to Syracuse fans is SU's season opener versus former chief rival Penn State, which sees the Orange as five-point underdogs. Though there's a lot left to learn about both teams, it's not all that surprising to see the Nittany Lions (8-4 last year) as favorites against SU (8-5 last year), I guess. As we're well aware, the Orange are replacing most of its coaching staff, while Penn State's still dealing with scholarship reductions and a postseason ban.

A lot could change before the two teams face off at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., but this is where we stand right now. All-time, Syracuse is 23-42-5 against Penn State, losing its last four in a row by a combined score of 144-53. Most recently, PSU beat the Orange 28-7 in the second game of the Doug Marrone regime.

Also, for those curious, here are point spreads for some of the other ACC teams, as they currently look for week one:

Georgia Bulldogs (+2) at Clemson Tigers

Florida State Seminoles (-8.5) at Pittsburgh Panthers

North Carolina Tar Heels (+14.5) at South Carolina Gamecocks

Virginia Tech Hokies (+22.5) vs. Alabama Crimson Tide (in Atlanta, Ga.)
