How the heck did we get this far before Syracuse University decided to retire the jersey of Lawrence Moton, who remains the all-time leading scorer in the history of Syracuse Orange basketball? No idea, but we've made it. Well, more specifically, Moten has...
During the Final Four weekend in Atlanta, the Orange legend said he had been told by the university that his jersey will be retired during the 2013- 2014 basketball season.
Moten's No. 21 jersey will join Vic Hansen, Wilmeth Sidat-Singh, Billy Gabor, Dave Bing, Pearl Washington, Derrick Coleman, Rony Seikaly, Sherman Douglas, Billy Owens and Carmelo Anthony up in the rafters. As always, it's important to note that Syracuse retires jerseys, not numbers (except 44).
Moten, who was a crowd constant during SU's recent tourney run, sounds pretty humbled by the whole thing:
"To actually be up there in the rafters with the legendary Dave Bing and my friends D.C. (Derrick Coleman) and Billy (Owens) is an honor," he said. "They’re my big brothers."
If we go by my standard from 2007, John Wallace should be up next for a jersey retirement, unless you want to reach back to Roosevelt Bouie & Louie Orr, which I'm fine with as well.
