Rough news out of the Syracuse Orange women's lacrosse team's 16-4 drubbing of the Cornell Big Red on Tuesday. Star player Michelle Tumolo suffered a torn ACL that will require surgery, ending her season and probably her SU career.
No timetable has been determined for the surgery, head coach Gary Gait said. Gait added that he has yet to look into appealing for a medical redshirt for Tumolo, but said he plans to.
"As a coach, you feel bad for the athlete that goes down hurt, anytime that happens," Gait said. "But I think as a coach, we all understand that you got to be ready for these situations. … We played all year to be prepared to be deep and have some players that can play if one did go down.
"We’ll just move forward and hopefully the team will come tighter and kind of rally around Michelle and we’ll see."
Tumolo is 3rd on the team in goals (22) and leads the team in assists (24) and is 3rd all-time in points (278). Basically, it's like the men's team losing a Powell brother late in the season.
The Orange will try to move forward without Tumolo starting Friday when Notre Dame visits the Dome. They'll have three more games after that before the Big East Tournament.
Good luck to Michelle in her recovery.
