Drew Allen isn't officially a Syracuse University student yet, let alone a member of the Syracuse Orange football team, let alone the starting quarterback of said team. However, you and I both know Allen is going to bring with him massive expectations and hopes that he's a catalyst to take the 2013 season to the next level.
Case and point, someone's already talking about him as an NFL prospect.
Of course, the source is a little biased. Sonny Detmer, father of Ty and Coy, and sometimes-mentor to one Drew Allen, spoke to Nate Mink about the work he's done with Allen over the years and how high he thinks Drew can go.
"Sonny just kind of needed a project I think more than anything," said Andy Allen, Drew's father. "He and Sonny just hit it off from the get-go. When Drew was a little bitty thing, Sonny always said this kid is gonna amount to something."
Said Sonny: "You just get me Super Bowl tickets. That's all I need when he gets up (to the NFL) because I think he's a real pro prospect."
The articles does something that so many other articles about Allen have done...convince you that if he had chosen to go to any school other than Oklahoma, he would have been a 2-3 year starter there by now.
Meanwhile, the D.O. spoke with Allen's high school coach to get his reaction and feedback, which is positive as you guessed.
"He’s been trained to step in at any time to take over for Landry — he ran second team the whole time — and to get him ready in case something happened," Byrd said. "I think he’s been trained well under the best. He’s a great athlete."
"He’s become much stronger, much quicker," Byrd said. "His preparation to understand defenses and stuff like that has come along very well. He’s done all the things he needs to do to play college quarterback, he just hasn’t had a shot to get on the field."
Shot forthcoming...
