In a game that had the feel of a November basketball game, the Syracuse Orange (6-2) defeated Canisius (1-7) 17-5. The win gave the Syracuse Lacrosse program 200 all-time victories in the Carrier Dome as opposed to just 29 losses.
Kevin Rice led the way for the Orange, tallying six points with three goals as the Orange went into the half up 12-1, so yes, I don't think John Desko cared too much about the second half.
Derek Maltz finally broke out for four goals, while Ryan Barber, Scott Loy and Derek DeJoe all scored two goals apiece. The game started with Rice, Barber and Loy each scoring unassisted goals and the Orange up 5-1 after the first.
The second was even more Orange, as Syracuse scored seven unanswered in the quarter. Canisius attempted to stop the bleeding after seven Orange goals by swapping goalies, however Syracuse continued their tear thanks to a 51.5% shooting percentage, a season high.
"Offensively, I thought we were pretty efficient," SU head coach John Desko said. "I think we were shooting 50 percent going into halftime. I think when you are shooting 50 percent you're happy with how the guys are shooting. In the third quarter we already had 16 goals. We wanted to be a little more patient offensively. This is a young (Canisius) team so we didn't want to rub things in. I thought we took care of the ball and came out with a good win."
Awe, John. Look at you showing more maturity than me on Madden.
Syracuse travels to Princeton on Saturday for a contest that will be televised on ESPNU at 5 p.m. eastern standard time. Yes, this could potentially conflict with a Final Four game. No, I'm not 100% sure on that. No, I'm not trying to jinx anything. Ok, I'm gonna go back to hiding in my mom's basement.
