Lost in the madness of the weekend was the fact that the Syracuse Orange men's lacrosse team lost to the 1-5 Villanova Wildcats. Of course, Villanova's record was a bit misleading but...yeesh. Not out of the woods yet, I guess.
College Crosse has compiled all of the rankings and you'll see that across the list, 5-2 Syracuse is an aggregate No. 8 overall. However, specifically in the media and coaches polls, the Orange dropped to No. 9. LaxPower, which is a bit more math-y, has Syracuse all the way down at No. 13.
So what the heck happened? Villanova played a complete game, that's what:
It took four quarters of effort for Villanova to drop Syracuse -- the first time this season that the Wildcats have played a full 60 minutes and earned a victory against a quality opponent -- and the Wildcats accomplished the feat in the hardest way possible: By being decent but not fantastic.
Add to it that Syracuse played sloppy (SU turned the ball over on 59% of their possessions), and it means this Orange squad isn't quite as "back" as hoped.
For his part, JoJo Marasco stepped up after the loss to promise change...

Syracuse will have a chance at that redemption this Friday, March 29 when Canisius comes to the Carrier Dome. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be televised on Time Warner Cable Sports.
