Conference Realignment: Notre Dame Will Join ACC Next Season

According to SI, Notre Dame will join the ACC next season in basketball (and everything else except football while they're at it).

US PRESSWIRE

Syracuse Orange fans have had concerns about the lack of rivalries headed into the ACC. However, they're going to have one more familiar face than expected with the news that the Notre Dame Fighting Irish will announce that they will play basketball in the ACC starting next season, via SI.

Notre Dame’s basketball teams will play in the ACC next year, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation. The Big East presidents will vote on the issue Tuesday morning, and an announcement is expected sometime after their conference call ends.

"It’s everyone’s intention that this will happen tomorrow," said the source

Since the Maryland Terrapins will still be in the ACC, the schedule-maker will have to put together a 15-team schedule. That number will stay the same in 2014-2015 when Maryland leaves and the Louisville Cardinals enter. Notre Dame is locked into home-and-homes with Boston College and Georgia Tech every year so they're likely to play SU only once, though twice is a possibility.

While not mentioned in the SI news story, that undoubtedly means that Notre Dame will play every other non-football sport in the ACC next season as well. ACC Lacrosse will be just this-side of insane. The current rankings of all six teams are No. 1, No. 4, No. 7, No. 8, No. 11 and No. 17.
