A furious weekend of Big East action is over and here are the main threads:
Freshman Shaina Harrison missed winning the 60m dash by 5 thousandths of a second (that is 0.005) and came in second to Louisville's Margret Harris. As the only underclassmen to make the final of the 60m, she had an excellent showing.
Brianna Nerud had an excellent weekend, qualifying for the final of the 1,000m dash and finishing 6th in the event, then ran the 1200m leg of the 5th place distance medley relay, and then leading off the women's 4x800m relay that finished 5th. Lot's of miles on her legs from this weekend!
Lauren Penney anchored the distance medley relay to a 5th place showing, running the best split of the field in 4:37. She came back the following day to run a 3km race that was odd, to say the least. The race was called back after 1km (about 3:30) into the race as the officials set the athletes up on the wrong starting line. The race was run an hour after the race was stopped. Despite these difficulties Penney ran a strong 3rd place showing.
Donald Pollitt and Amadou Gueye finished 1-2 in the 60m hurdles. Donald's tme puts him into the conversation for the NCAA meet and established a new SPIRE Institute facility record.
Jaquan Holland and Jihaad Howard finished 2-4 respectively in the 60m dash. Jaquan returned to finish 5th in the 200m race.
Martin Hehir pulled out all the stops in a wonderfully executed 3,000m run. Unfortunately his kick came just short of a very talented Sam McEntee from Villanova as Martin finished 2nd in 8:04. The day before he finished 6th in the 5km race.
Ryan Urie ran a 4:01 split in the mile leg of the Distance Medley Relay to round out a 4th place squad that broke the Syracuse University indoor record from 2009. The top 4 DMR's all broke the previous facility record.
The men's team finished finished tied for 6th with Pitt, while the women came in 9th on the team front.
The track teams will be in action again at Columbia's Last Chance meet in NYC, IC4As, and the NCAA championship meet. Full results or the weekend can be found here, as well as the Big East renditon of the recap.
