Wilson: Syracuse reaches bowl eligibility after players buy in to Shafer | The Daily Orange
"Coach Shafe used to talk to us about how we could build the program back up and get it back to the level of prestige that it once was, so that’s what we try to do," Spruill said. "We’re getting there. Three bowl games in four years. We’ve set a bar in the ACC — not a bar as high as we wanted to — but for the first year in a new conference it was good for me."
"I would have regretted it more if I hadn't," Allen said. "I would be down at Oklahoma, who knows, maybe I get a shot, maybe I don't. You know, whatever. But I wasn't going to leave that up to chance. I pursued this path because I believed in it."
Syracuse has drawn 30,000 for a nonleague December game twice since the Carrier Dome opened. Once was on Dec. 10, 1983, when a top-ranked North Carolina team with a junior by the name of Michael Jordan trounced the Orange 87-64 before a crowd of 32,235. The other time was Dec. 2, 1989, when then-No. 1 Syracuse handled No. 16 Temple 73-56 in its most notable early-season home game.
No bowl-eligible team from an automatic qualifying conference have been omitted from the postseason since 2007 when Louisville, South Carolina and Iowa all finished 6-6 and didn't participate in the postseason. There were three fewer bowl games back then and six fewer spots.

CBS' Jerry Palm says Syracuse one of four bubble teams fighting for three bowl spots | syracuse.com
"These are not merit-based rules," Palm said. "The standings don't matter much. They really care about how a team travels. Even something like when a basketball game is being played might be a factor. If Syracuse has a basketball game during that period it would make it less attractive because fans would stay home to watch that. Even things like that matter."
