The Big East slate rolls on as the Syracuse Orange head to Tampa for the final time(?) to take on the South Florida Bulls. Let's get the particulars out of the way.
Date: Sunday, January 6th
Time: 12:00 p.m. EST
Location: Sun Dome, Tampa, FL
TV: Time Warner Cable Sports/SNY/Big East Network
Announcers: Anish Shroff & Bob Wenzel
Radio: Syracuse IMG Network/WAER 88.3/WTKW 99.5 FM/ESPN 97.7 FM/Sirius 112/XM 197
Records: Syracuse 13-1, South Florida 9-3
Rankings: Syracuse No. 7/7, USF UNR
USF's Last Game: The Bulls upended local (and impending Big East) rival Central Florida, 65-56.
USF played as well last night as they have all season, flipping their previous loss with a 65-56 win via a combination of toughness, heart, character, and stifling defense. Strapping the Knights into the dentist chair from last March, they grinded out a tough road win by drawing even on the glass (C. Florida had 29 rebounds, USF 28) and defending the perimeter much more effectively (the Knights were 4-22 from three-point range). The Bulls also were outstanding protecting possessions, with just six turnovers for a season low.
Series: Syracuse leads 9-1.
Current Streak: 4, Syracuse
Last Game: Syracuse's 56-38 victory over USF last season is memorable as being "the platinum game." I was told we would never speak of it again. I was mis-told.
Boeheim's Record Vs: 9-1
USF Last Year: The Bulls finished last season 22-14 and 12-6 in the Big East. It tied the school record for most wins in a season and the team made it to the NCAA Tournament. They won their "First Four" game over Cal and upset 5-seed Temple before falling to Ohio in the third round.
USF Coach: Stan Heath (6th season) - It's a credit to Heath that he's still at the helm at USF. He turned a bottom-feeder into an NCAA Tournament team last year. His 79-90 record isn't indicative of the solid work he's done there.
"Fear Me, I've Killed Hundreds Of Timelords": Toarlyn Fitzpatrick (who really does sound like the kind of person who has killed Timelords) leads the team with 11.7 PPG but he's one of four players averaging between 10-12 PPG for the Bulls. Victor Rudd, Jawanza Poland and Anthony Collins all chip in regularly as well.
Fun Fact: More than 7,000 tickets have been sold for the game as of Thursday and they are expecting 10K. I guess that's good?
Unexciting Reason To Watch: Syracuse has a way of playing down to USF, especially in the Sun Dome. It's one of those games you're not supposed to worry about but inevitably have to.
Exciting Reason To Watch: Michael Carter-Williams has to get a triple-double eventually, right?
