For the third straight week, Syracuse is ranked in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Despite a 64-59 loss to Villanova (16-3, 5-1) on Saturday, it was the Wildcats, not the Orange, who was dropped from the Coaches Poll. Syracuse defeated St. John's (9-9, 3-3) 60-57 in Carnesecca Arena on Wednesday. If you haven't seen the video of the game-winning shot by Brittney Sykes from last Wednesday, you can find it here.
Syracuse has not been ranked in the AP Top 25 at any point this season. This week, the Orange received six votes, making them fifth among non-ranked teams.
In other news, Brittney Sykes made the Big East Honor Roll, announced Monday. The freshman guard scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds against St. John's. On Saturday, she scored 14 points to go along with six rebounds. Sykes has also been named Big East Freshman of the Week twice: on Dec. 31 and Jan. 7.
Sykes and the Orange will get a chance to bolster their No. 24 ranking against two of the Big East's weaker teams. Syracuse faces Seton Hall (8-12, 3-4) Wednesday night in the Carrier Dome. On Saturday, SU hosts the Providence Friars (6-13, 1-5) at 1.
