Of the players on the roster, I look for Smith to take over for Bailey as the primary asset in the SU backfield. I was encouraged by his performance in last season’s finale at Pittsburgh (10 carries for 56 yards) but overall was more impressed by his running style – one cut and hit the hole hard. It is a style I believe head coach Doug Marrone prefers to backs who do too much dancing as they approach the line of scrimmage. Bailey and Delone Carter were mostly one-cut runners who enjoyed 1,000-yard seasons under Marrone.

Syracuse Football 12 in '12: #10 Jerome Smith | syracuse.com
Smith has a nice jump start to move into the #1 spot. He was Bailey's backup last season. He had a nice game vs Pittsburgh in the 2011 season finale with 56 yards on 10 carries overall, including a 10-yard TD run. The guy loves contact and can set a strong "get out of my way or this is gonna hurt" kind of tone running the ball.
