It's June and we're already on #30 in these profiles? Color me impressed.
Position: Running Back
Year: Sophomore
Height: 5'7''
Weight: 176 pounds
Hometown: Brooklyn, NY
High School: Canarsie
How'd He Get Here?: Steve Rene is a Brooklyn kid, and Doug Marrone was all like "Yo, Syracuse?" and Rene was all like "sounds good coach" and because Doug Marrone gets all of the (not five star rated) New York City kids, it was a wrap.
Rene told Donnie Webb that he picked SU over Temple, Rutgers, BC and Oregon.
2011 Stats: Rene dabbled in a number of different areas. He had 10 punt returns for a total of 22 yards, five carries for nine yards, a catch for four yards, and five total tackles on special teams.
2012 Projections: Rene's role will probably stay the same although I expect that he will see a few more passes out of the backfield designed to get him into the open field.
Scout/Rivals Said: Two-stars and Two-stars respectively.
Money Quote:
"Everything was perfect," said Rene of his unofficial visit to the Syracuse campus on Tuesday. "The campus, the facilities, the Dome ... everything was a major shock. As soon as walked into the building, I saw the big trophies, the pictures of Ernie Davis, Donovan McNabb, Keith Bulluck ... it was wonderful. It was inspirational, especially Ernie Davis. He was a running back, the same position I play. It was awesome. I could see myself playing there."
Links of Wonder: There's not too much on Steve out there, so here's the article from Donnie about Rene choosing SU.
What Does Marrone Wheatley Think?: The RBs coach on what Rene and Prince-Tyson Gulley bring to the table-
"We talk about a heavyweight fighter who is just going to lean on you round after round after round," Wheatley said. "We also now have some featherweight guys who are going to throw a lot of punches. It’s good to have. Even to the untrained eye you can see it and you know it, and it’s real exciting."
Interesting Nugget O'Interest: In 2008, Rene won the "Old Spice Red Zone player of the year" so clearly he stays smelling fresh under pressure, or something...
