Technically, the Syracuse Orange women's lacrosse team finished the best of all the "real" Big East teams this season. They lose the Big East Tournament Championship to something called the Loyola Greyhounds, which apparently counts as a Big East team in lacrosse...but you and I know better.
The 16-3 Orange saw their fifteen-game winning streak get snapped in the finale of the BET, losing 13-7 in a game that wasn't even really that close.
"I give Loyola a lot of credit," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "They played an outstanding game. I thought mentally we struggled with the style of the goalkeeper. Our players were not confident taking their shots and we shot well below our season average. We didn’t make the adjustments we’ve been talking about for a week and half (since the last time we played them)."
The Orange trailed 7-3 at the half and were never able to make up the difference.
Michelle Tumolo and Alyssa Murray each scored two goals and Tumolo added an assist. Tumolo, Murray and Becca Block were named to the All-Tournament team.
Up next for the Orange is whatever seed they earn in the NCAA Tournament. The field will be announced at the Division I Women’s Lacrosse Selection Announcement on Sunday at 9 p.m., broadcast on NCAA.com.
