When I said...you thought...but I meant...but you totally...and I said...but...hooooooo boy!
Syracuse Orange basketball assistant and lady-in-waiting Mike Hopkins will be adding some new duties to his repertoire as co-head coach of the USA Select Team. He'll be coaching alongside Toronto Raptors head coach Jay Triano, who has hopefully washed all that Canada off of him by now.
The USA Select Team, which features 13 of the NBA's young, rising stars, will train against the USA Olympic team this July in Las Vegas.
Hopkins, who recently completed his 15th season as an assistant for the Orange, has served as a court coach at the USA Basketball National Team training camps in 2006 and 2010. He was a court coach at USA Basketball's 2000 U20 National Team and 2001 U21 World Championship Team trials.
So that means, during the summer, Mike Hopkins is a head coach and Jim Boeheim is an assistant. How you like me now, Jimmy???
Pretty good gig to add to Hopkins' resume for the post-Boeheim world. A lot of folks are going to doubt his ability to keep Syracuse at it's current level (ahem) and he's got his ammunition ready to go.
Some of the players that Hopkins will work with include Kyrie Irving, John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Taj Gibson, Kawhi Leonard and Jeremy Lin. Pretty cool.
The USA Select Team will head to Las Vegas for a July 5 training session and then train with the USA National Team July 6-11.
