Well, after all that worrying and concern, someone sat down and did the math and no matter what happens against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the final game of the regular season, the Syracuse Orange will enter the 2012 Big East Lacrosse Tournament as the No. 3 seed.
SU radio broadcaster Brian Higgins did the tie-breaking math Saturday following the game Saturday and concluded that SU was in at the three seed. That would leave Georgetown and St. John’s tied for the fourth spot, and St. John’s won the head-to-head battle between the two after trailing by two goals with less than a minute to play. That loss killed Georgetown’s postseason chances.
Georgetown, you can't win for losing.
That means the Orange will play the Villanova Wildcats in the first round of the BET and that's not the fun-sounding proposition it usually is. The Wildcats handed the Orange their first Big East loss ever earlier this season. Oh and did I mention the BET is being played at Villanova this year?
And then if they want to qualify for the NCAA Tournament, they'll likely have to beat No. 5 Notre Dame in the next game, assuming they win. Lose either of those games and the season is likely over. Of course they could do themselves a favor and beat Notre Dame on Saturday, which would give them a second quality win and improve their RPI, though it might be too late for that to matter.
If the Orange are going for degree of difficulty, they've won that battle.
The Big East Tournament kicks off Thursday, May 5th with the Notre Dame - St. John's game on ESPNU at 4:30 pm ET and the Syracuse - Villanova game at 7:00 pm ET live on ESPN3.com and tape-delayed on ESPNU at 10pm. The winners will play Saturday, May 5th at Noon.
