Syracuse vs. San Diego St: Battle On The Midway On Way Out?

So I hope you weren't one of those people who coughed up $4,999 to watch the Syracuse Orange take on the San Diego St. Aztecs in the Battle on the Midway on November 9th. Or if you were, I hope you used your AMEX card so you can easily get a refund in case it gets cancelled, as it may just according to the San-Diego Union Tribune.

A half-dozen sources told UT San Diego that the Aztecs’ season-opening game against Syracuse on the deck of a retired aircraft carrier is in jeopardy of being called off, although a final decision isn’t expected for another day or two.

"We're in discussions with the schools and we're optimistic we can find a solution," said Fox Sports spokesman Chris Bellitti, whose network has the broadcast rights to the game. "We still want to produce and televise the game on the Midway as planned."

The problem, it seems, is that the game was part of an event that seems to be crumbling around it. The weekend was also supposed to include a fan fest on the pier, a concert for charity and a gala dinner and all three of those things have already been cancelled.

Fox Sports says they're still trying to work it out but they also haven't announced any sponsors, which isn't a good sign.

The Post-Standard tried to reach out to SU for comment and got nada.

The question I keep asking myself is, even if the event gets cancelled, why can't Syracuse just play SD State anyway? We've already booked the trip, I'm sure. Why not just play them in their arena or, if you want to maintain the "neutral" integrity of the event, at a local arena that can be used, like the 14,000-seat Valley View Casino Center?

It would also be a great opportunity to prove to a lot of people who are snickering today that Syracuse will travel even when it's not required.
