Owens is a last name that's worked out pretty well for Syracuse so far. Leroy Owens plans on keeping that streak going, I'm sure.
Owens is a 6-foot-3, 205-pound outside linebacker who will be a senior at Palatka High School. He is the 17th commitment in the SU recruiting class of 2012.
A three-sport athlete for the Panthers, Owens also plays basketball and competes in the hurdles and triple jump in track and field.
Owens is apparently so under the radar, a lot of folks haven't even heard of him. Syracuse was his only offer as far as I can tell, Rivals hasn't rated him, Scout hasn't rated him, though ESPN has some nice thoughts on Owens:
Owens is a tall and athletic defensive end/OLB tweener falling under the radar. Will most likely get recruited to play linebacker and has very good height and length, an ideal frame to develop. Runs well for his size.
Owens had 93 tackles, 10 sacks and 15 pass breakups for the Palatka Panthers as a junior and was named to the All-Putnam County team. His key to success? Hitting people.
"I like knocking people over," Owens said when asked about his style of play. "I never give up on plays, and I try to be the first one in on the tackle."
Owens is recruit No. 4 to hail from Florida in the SU Class of 2012.
