Player: Van Chew

Number: #82

Position: Wide Receiver

Year: Senior

Height: 6'1"

Weight: 161

Hometown: Manassas, VA

High School: Centreville HS

2010 Stats: 41 Receptions, 611 Yards, 5 TD

2011 Projections: Van was definitely one of the surprise breakout players of 2010, but did most of his damage during the beginning of the season as injuries plagued him down the stretch.  If he can stay healthy this season, he should continue to be a legitimate deep threat for Ryan Nassib, and put up similar or better numbers.  More talent at receiver this season should allow Van to get into more one-on-one defensive backs, which is a great situation for Syracuse with his superlative leaping and catching ability.

How'd He Get Here?: Van wasn't very heavily recruited out of high school, as Scout only lists him with other offers from Delaware and Hampton, so he is one of the more under recruited stars of the team at this point.

What did Scout/Rivals say?:  Both listed Van as a 2-star recruit.

Money Quote: "My whole life people always said I was too skinny to do this or that...I just prove them wrong every time I make a play."  Don't doubt Van...or do, that seems to yield solid results.

Links of Wonder: Dave Rahme talks about Van growing into the role of SU's go-to receiver.

What Does Marrone think?: "I started watching and was like holy cow...I mean, from a route standpoint and the way he was getting off press coverage there was a big difference. He always could run and he always could catch. By midway through spring ball we started really getting excited about him but nobody picked up on it."

Interesting Nugget(s) O'Interest:  Chew was sort of a legacy recruit to SU, as his cousins Derek and Daniel Bailey both suited up for SU before him.  Van also played some quarterback at Centreville.  While Van's size is something many point to as a major detractor in his game, he is pound-for-pound one of the strongest members of the team.  Even though he only weighs between 160 and 170 (depending on what he eats that day according to strength coach Will Hicks), he can bench press 365 pounds.
