Not exactly breaking news, I know. The undefeated Orange, off to their best start in over 20 years and having just defeated No. 3 Duke, remain the No. 1 team in all the land for another week.
In the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll, the Orange received all 12 first-place votes. Big East rival Notre Dame is officially nipping at their heels at No. 2 and previously-dispatched Johns Hopkins is lurking at No. 3. As required by NCAA Lacrosse law, two ACC teams, Duke and Maryland, round out the Top 5.
Over in the USILA Division I Coaches Poll, the Orange received ten first-place votes. Notre Dame, Hopkins, Duke and North Carolina are the rest of your Top 5. There seems to be a difference of opinion between the two polls when it comes to Maryland, whom the coaches dropped down to 7th.
Here's what all-knowing, all-loving Quint Kessenich had to say about the Orange following their win:
Syracuse woke up on Sunday night in the Meadowlands, dominating Duke in the first half, leading 9-2 at the half. Defender John Lade left the game early with an ankle injury and the Orange gave up five goals to end the game. Goalie John Galloway won his 52nd game as a starter, which is an NCAA record. Cuse is 8-0 with all of the wins being over Top 20 teams.
The only other Big East team in the rankings besides SU and ND is Villanova, who continues to lurk at No. 11 in both polls. The Wildcats will have to try and make a case for an non-AQ NCAA bid as they have losses to Syracuse and Notre Dame.
