The Juice is reporting that defensive assistant coaches Dan Conley and Jimmy Brumbaugh have been fired by Doug Marrone. The source spoke on the condition of anonymity.
If true, it's a bit of a surprise given the areas these two coaches have worked with and the development of their players in the past two years. Both oversaw units in transition in 2011 and were likely looking forward to building on that next year.
Conley is a Syracuse icon. A two-time All Big East First Teamer and a member of the All-Century Team, he's been the team's linebacker coach since 2008. He is the last coach to remain from the Greg Robinson Era. He also has strong recruiting ties in Pennsylvania.
Meanwhile, Brumbaugh originally came to Syracuse in 2010 as the defensive line coach but focused on defensive tackles this year. Tim Daoust was brought on to handle the defensive ends.
Brent Axe reached out to Doug Marrone for confirmation, to which the head coach replied via spokesman, "All coaches are under contract."
SyracuseFan's John Garcia reached out to Sue Edson, who replied "Coach Marrone told me that all of the coaches from the season are still under contract."
Both coaches are still listed on the SU Athletics site.
So, we wait to hear something from SU. Or not hear something from SU, as the case may be.
