Since I wasn't able to do this last week, I'll be recapping the last two weeks of Syracuse commits' high school games today.
Milford Academy won two more games over the last few weeks to put its record at 7-0. Ashton Broyld (QB, 6'3", 225) has seen a decline in his playing time over the last few games. In Milford's 40-24 win over Army Prep, he went 3-for-7 passing for 55 yards and ran 11 times for 54 yards and a touchdown. He didn't see very much time in Milford's 44-7 win over Stevenson University, going 0-for-2 passing and only running once for 3 yards. Tyree Smallwood (RB, 5'10", 165) didn't play against Army Prep, and only rushed twice for four yards against Stevenson.
Tottenville split their last two games. Against Erasmus, Alvin Cornelius (WR, 6'3", 190) struggled against another player Syracuse has a lot of interest in, defensive back Wayne Morgan. Morgan has offers from Alabama, Michigan, Penn State, Miami and everywhere in between. Cornelius was able to grab two passes for 50 receiving yards. In their most recent game, a 26-20 overtime win over Port Richmond, Cornelius caught 6 passes for 80 yards.
DeVante McFarlane (RB, 6'1", 195) continues to impress for Half Hollow Hills West (2-3) despite the team's recent struggles. On September 24, they dropped a 43-42 heartbreaker to Riverhead. McFarlane threw for 282 yards and 2 TDs and rushed for 97 yards and 4 TDs in the loss. Four days later, HHHW dropped another game, this one to East Islip 28-7. McFarlane struggled, completing 10-for-19 passes 101 yards with 3 interceptions. He also rushed 11 times for 37 yards and a touchdown. Half Hollow Hills West dropped its third straight game on October 6th, with a 34-28 loss to West Babylon. McFarlane threw for two touchdowns and ran for an additional one in the loss. Word is that McFarlane is starting to hear from some big programs, including Penn State, so hopefully the coaches will hold on to his verbal commitment.
Harold Brantley (DT, 6'3", 280), who I remind you has been recruited to play defensive line, continues to put up freakish numbers for Hershey (6-0). In a 33-16 win over Mechanicsburg, the big man ran 10 times for 100 yards and two touchdowns, and ran a kick back 82 yards for a score. He also caught a pass for 13 yards. Brantley followed that performance up with a 15 rush, 115 yard game in a 29-22 win over CD East this past week.
Ben Lewis (WR, 6'2", 185) continues to do everything for the Middletown Knights (5-1). In a 49-6 drubbing of Oakdale, he caught 5 passes for 63 yards and a touchdown, rushed once for three yards, recorded six tackles (2.5 TFLs), recovered a fumble, and returned two punts for 34 yards. Urbana handed Middletown its first loss of the year on Thursday, 28-6. Lewis was held to two receptions for 27 yards, four rushes for 7 yards, six tackles and a fumble recovery.
Julian Whigham (S, 6'1", 175) and Dwyer advanced to 4-1 with a 52-7 win over West Boca Raton. Whigham returned a punt for 45 yards and a score in the game.
Gainesville High's defense continues to dominate, helping the Hurricanes to a No. 6 ranking in the Class 6A polls. Tashon Whitehurst (LB, 6'3", 190) intercepted a pass in a 21-0 shutout of Eastside. The 'Canes followed that up with a 56-7 blowout win against Inverness Citrus last week.
Palatka High has yet to get off the schneid, and is now 0-5 on the season. In the 27-14 loss to Baker County on September 30th, Leroy Owens (LB, 6'4", 210) recorded 17 tackles and a fumble recovery. Owens recorded another 13 tackles and recovered a fumble in the 13-12 loss to Nease last week.
Darius Parson (OLB, 6'2", 215) and Woodbridge are coming off of two straight wins. In a 38-13 win over Osbourn Park, he rushed 6 times for 25 yards and recorded 4 tackles. This past week, Woodbridge edged out a win over Potomac 21-19. Parson rushed 8 times for 68 yards and a touchdown, and recorded 8 tackles.
