Rob Long may just go down in history as the greatest punter to ever boot a football for Syracuse University. I don't envy the guy who's got to follow him. That guy being Oakfield-Alabama Central High School's Jonathan Fisher, who has given Syracuse his verbal commitment to play in 2011.
Fisher is a 6-foot-2, 205-pound kicker at Oakfield-Alabama. According to the school's athletics web site, he averaged 46.7 yards per kick on 19 punts during the 2009 season. He also kicked extra points and field goals, making 19 of 21 PATs and hitting five of 10 field goal attempts.
"I've always wanted to go to Syracuse," said Fisher, who also had been talking to Big East schools Rutgers, Connecticut and West Virginia before choosing the Orange.
Fisher says he committed to SU as soon as he got the offer. I don't mean he went home and gave it a courtesy though, I mean he literally committed right then and there.
"I was there this morning and they offered me face to face. My dad and I got out of the car and coach (Bob) Casullo came walking right towards us. Right in the parking lot he told us they wanted to offer me. They said I had 24 hours but I told him, ‘Coach, I’m taking it."
Pretty good for us, considering MaxPreps considers him the No. 1 punter in New York.
