Tim Desko, sophomore attackman for the SU lacrosse team and son of head coach John Desko, didn't travel with the team this past weekend to play Johns Hopkins. When pressed for a reason, Coach & Papa Desko said...
"Tim sustained an injury a few days ago. At this point I don’t feel comfortable saying anything further until I have more information on the severity of it."
Curious for certain. Perhaps part of the reason Coach was holding off was because of any police or legal issues as well. According to Syracuse.com, Tim was injured in a fight Thursday morning in Armory Square.
Desko was with three other males in front of Mully’s Bar on West Fayette Street about 2:10 a.m. when he was attacked, a witness told police. The witness said there was a man in a ripped shirt who appeared angry and when Desko and the others walked by, the man challenged the group to a fight, police said.
The four men told the man in the ripped shirt that they had no intention of fighting and that’s when the man struck Desko and ran away, police said.
Desko was taken to the hospital where he was treated. No word yet on the severity of the injury and how long he'll be out of commission. John Desko did say the following (reading from a script) on Tuesday:
"He was waiting for a cab and was struck from behind without warning or provocation. He sustained multiple injuries. From police reports it has been determined that he was not responsible for any wrongdoing and is now recuperating."
I admit, the first thing I thought when I heard "lacrosse player" and "fight" was that they must have instigated it. Such is the reputation that college lacrosse players are burdened with, fairly or not. But it sounds completely the opposite. Hopefully Tim is back on his feet soon. The younger Desko is a solid contributor for the Orange, scoring 13 goals and 4 assists last season. He has already accumulated 4 goals and 2 assists in four games this year.
