Lots of Cuse-related happenings went down this past weekend. Let's get caught up, shall we?
On Friday, the men's lacrosse team kicked off it's Threepeat Tour with a 15-9 beatdown of the Denver Omelettes.
SU shot and shot and shot and scored and scored and scored. By the time the quarter was over Lowell was on the bench and Syracuse was up 8-2 and well on the way to a convincing 15-9 victory before a Dome crowd of 4,938. Any thoughts of an upset engineered by SU nemesis Bill Tierney, in his first season as Denver’s head coach, were buried under the barrage.
John Galloway sparkled in goal for the Orange and the SU defense stood tall despite not having the services of juniors John Lade and Tom Guadagnolo. Cody "Hand Me The Tewaaraton Now" Jamieson led the SU with four goals. The Orange are No. 1 in the Nike and USILA Coaches Poll, though Quint Kessinich has the Orange No. 2 behind the ACC's Virginia (shocker). Syracuse now prepares for 1-0 Army on Sunday.
Since we're part of a lacrosse conference now, there was this weird sensation SU fans felt this weekend. Not only was Duke losing to Notre Dame fun to watch, but it was also a might strike by the Big East Conference across the bow of the ACC Conference's ship. Game on.
The women's lacrosse team must think the men's team is a bunch of slackers. Not only did the ladies win their opener 17-5 over Colgate on Friday, but they followed it up with a 16-7 victory against No. 12 Stanford on Sunday. The ladies remain at No. 6 in the nation and head to Virginia on Saturday for their first road test of the year.
The men's basketball team got a brief respite this weekend but the women were in action, winning a critical Big East game over Rutgers 76-45 at the RAC. Senior Nicole Michael became the school’s all-time leading rebounder as she recorded 11 boards and 14 points on the day. Michael has 937 total rebounds which puts her ahead of former Orange Felisha Legette. It was Syracuse's first-ever win at Rutgers. Crazy. The women are now 19-7 (6-7) as they try to make their case for the NCAA Tourney.
We don't always mention the track stars of SU but the Orange did pretty well at the Big East Indoor Championship this weekend. Our old friend Michael LeBlanc and senior Uhunoma Osazuwa were SU's two champions on the day, in the 60-meter dash and long jump, respectively. Khadooz.
In other news, South Campus apartments were broken into over the weekend. I'm not quite sure how many break-ins it takes for SU to install security systems in those cement boxes but surely we must be closing in on it, right? The "Just Have The Public Safety Car Patrol The Neighborhood Every Two Hours" Technique has run its course.
Finally, not really an event that happened this weekend, just something I noticed that would make Malcolm Gladwell swoon. If you want your child to one-day grow up and play basketball for Syracuse, you could do worse than to time their birth with this week. Donte Greene, Mookie Jones and Brandon Triche all celebrate their birthdays this week. Set your conceptions for late May!
