Syracuse 31 - Cincinnati 7: Shock And Awe

Some final notes on the big win over Cincinnati.

You know it's a big deal when Bud Poliquin starts dropping Lost references. I'm just excited to know that Bud was a Lostie. Or at least that he watched the commercial.

We’ve reached that point with this Syracuse University football team in this remarkable Orange season, haven’t we? We’ve looked upon the magic -- equal parts confounding and exhilarating -- and have had to mutter, Charlie-like, "Guys (and gals), what is this?"

Dave Rahme explains that the key to victory was, as you might have expected, defense defense defense.

On defense, SU coordinator Scott Shafer orchestrated a perfect blend of pressure and coverage, keeping UC quarterback Chazz Anderson off-balance most of the game. SU’s over-under bracketing of Binns and Woods held a duo that was averaging 198 receiving yards a game and had combined for 15 touchdown receptions to nine receptions for 84 yards and one TD.

Despite the extra commitment it made to containing the dangerous wideouts SU was able to hold Pead to 23 yards on 11 carries (2.1 ypc). The result was a bunch of third-and-longs for Anderson, a nightmare scenario for a veteran, let alone a player making his first start since 2008.

Don't forget about the offensive line, however. The unit, which was assumed to be the weakest on the team as usual, has stepped up its play and helped Ryan Nassib get a handle on the offense.

Since the start of Big East play, Bartholomew and what was an inexperienced, struggling offensive line have swallowed whole the athletes of South Florida and West Virginia. Against Cincinnati, it was more about providing Nassib with time to do whatever he pleased versus one of the worst pass defenses in the country. The quarterback was given opportunity after opportunity on third down to find receivers sitting in seams in the Bearcat defense.

Said Carter: "The O-line did a tremendous job, and we just trusted our landmarks and it opened."
