Syracuse-Minnesota Post-Mortem

SU-Minnesota Recap - The Axeman - Syracuse.com
After one play, it looked like the Greg Robinson era had never ended. Good thing it was only one play and it was the first one, because Syracuse came out after that mistake and firmly put the past, and that play, behind them.

Minnesota was ready for Orange's final offensive play - Orange Football Blog
Syracuse hearts sank when Paulus, scrambling hard to his left, pulled up and tried to throw a pass across his body and into the end zone. It was intercepted by Minnesota's Nate Triplett, setting the stage for the Golden Gophers' win. But what made Paulus scramble in the first place?

Notebook: Bad beginnings, the Stallion and the return of Mike Williams - Orange Football Blog
At Syracuse University, they call it the "Stallion" formation. The trendy name through football these days is the "Wildcat" formation.

Syracuse University football team brings hope back to Carrier Dome - Syracuse.com
Sure, this one ended in a splat on the floor. And everybody realizes that a lot of mops will need to be pushed to clean up the mess that was made down the stretch at the Carrier Dome. But something quite nice took place on Saturday afternoon in the steamy joint where a real football game was played for the first time, it seems, in quite a while.

Halftime adjustments help Minnesota nip Syracuse University football team - Orange Football Blog
Three simple adjustments, two on defense and one on offense. The Minnesota football team made them at halftime Saturday and rode them to a come-from-behind 23-20 overtime victory over Syracuse before a Carrier Dome crowd of 48,617, spoiling Doug Marrone's debut as Orange coach.

Offensive miscues, second-half struggles cost Syracuse in tough loss to Minnesota - Orange Football Blog
Better. Encouraging. Doesn't change how Syracuse's 23-20 loss in overtime to Minnesota on Saturday feels like a familiar kick in the gut.

What we learned in the Big East, Week 1 - College Football Nation - ESPN
As dispiriting as the 23-20 overtime loss to Minnesota was, the Orange showed that they are no pushover.

Coach K would have been proud. Greg Paulus, the longtime Duke point guard, took his first competitive snap in nearly five years on the football field — and he didn't look out of place. Paulus, who transferred to Syracuse, is the starting quarterback for the Orange and acquitted himself pretty well in a 23-20 loss to Minnesota.

Watertown Daily Times | McNabb, alumni get glimpse of Syracuse's future
"You bring in a quarterback who seems like he's the Johnny Unitas of college football," McNabb said. "He's been through college and probably had a 9-to-5 (job), and now he's coming back to play this one year. What you're seeing is a guy who's really maturing. You have to remember, it's his first game."

Paulus Is Not a Flop in Debut - The Quad Blog - NYTimes.com
"Obviously he makes a mistake at the end of the game; he hadn’t been in that situation in a long time," Minnesota Coach Tim Brewster said. "I tell you what, he’s going to be a good football player. He’s a good athlete and can throw the ball well and he just gets in the system a little longer and plays a few more games, he’s going to be O.K."

Paulus has poise, yet poor judgment in SU loss | democratandchronicle.com | Democrat and Chronicle
It was a pass that would have made Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski wince. The player who threw it, former Duke point guard Greg Paulus, knew instantly he'd make a serious mistake.

Syracuse University Athletics - Head Coach Doug Marrone Postgame Quotes (Sept. 5, 2009)
We have to go back and look at where there were certain points where we could make the play and we didn’t come up with it, and make sure we look at it and can say, ‘Did we put them in the best position? Were they comfortable with those plays?’ I think obviously from our standpoint, they were.

HEARTBREAK: Paulus' overtime interception spoils 1st game of Marrone era - Sports
In his first organized football game since high school, Paulus went 19-of-31 for 167 yards, including a 29-yard touchdown strike to Mike Williams. For more than four quarters, he played mostly mistake-free and managed the offense like a seasoned veteran. Unfortunately for him and the Orange (0-1), one glaring error at the worst possible time was all it took.
