Sports Illustrated released its annual list of the 50 highest-earning American athletes on Wednesday. Former Syracuse University standouts Dwight Freeney and Carmelo Anthony are among the 22 basketball players, 14 major leaguers, nine football players, three golfers and two NASCAR drivers on this year's 'Fortunate 50.' The list is based on salary, winnings, bonuses, endorsements and appearance fees.

Maybe I'll be wrong, but I'm conceding the first two spots to Villanova and West Virginia. After that, though, Cincinnati, Georgetown, Connecticut, Notre Dame, Pitt, Louisville and Syracuse can make a case for third.
