Well, if Ricky Rubio is really considering going back to Spain rather than playing for the Timberwolves, he's off to a great start. The Timberwolves will be holding a press conference today at 3pm MST to introduce their new draft picks, which include Syracuse's Jonny Flynn. Flynn will be there and so will Wayne Ellington who was taken later in the first round.
But what about their fifth overall pick? He won't be attending. He's...busy?
Wolves president of basketball of operations David Kahn, through a team spokesman, cautioned not to ready anything into that..
Noooooooo....why would we read into the fact that your top draft pick, who's father said yesterday that he might not play for your team and who has been rumored in many trade deals since being picked, is going to go MIA when you're holding a press conference to introduce your newest stars? I can't imagine why anyone would do that.
Keep on pulling an Eli Manning, Ricky. Fine by us. You only make Jonny look that much more appealing to Minnesota fans.
T'wolves GM has admitted he's getting calls for Rubio, at least two he's saying publicly. He said he's confident in his ability to sign Rubio (uh-huh) but "he's not shut off to listening to what other teams have to say."
By the way, David Stern was really excited to call Johnny's name, wasn't he?
Some other reactions from around the Intertubes...
Sports Guy is just as perplexed as you about the T'wolves strategy, though what bothers him more than anything is both Rubio and Flynn's propensity to talk in the third person. At least Flynn didn't say anything as douchey as "I'm Ricky Rubio, I'm not like anyone else." Ugh.
Over at The Big Lead, they're comparing Minny GM Dave Kahn to a mix between Isiah Thomas and Chris Wallace, which, isn't high praise.
CuseOrange thinks despite Minnesota's strange behavior, it was a great night for Jonny Flynn and the Big East in general (9 players drafted).
Timberwolf Kevin Love was tweeting last night and though he was hoping for Stephen Curry, he seems pleased with Jonny instead. Plus, even he thinks his GM is crazy:
what are we doing????????????????? omg we better trade....what are we doing??????????? i dont even know
Neither do we.
