It's official, Dick "Coach Mac" MacPherson is Hall-of-Famer Dick "Coach Mac" MacPherson.
Legendary Syracuse head coach Dick MacPherson is officially a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. On Tuesday evening he and 17 others were inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame at the 52nd annual National Football Foundation Awards dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York City. One of two coaches in the 2009 class, MacPherson is the 17th person with Syracuse ties in the Hall of Fame.
There were some other yutzes there I've never heard of...Tim Brown, Major Harris, Chris Spielman, Pat Swilling, Gino Toretta...but obviously Mac was the big name on hand. For some strange reason, they saved the best for sixteenth and Mac got a chance to talk to the crowd.
"I just want everybody here to just imagine -- Is there any football coach in the country no matter what that would dream of being in this seat right here with me, sitting next to John Robinson?" MacPherson said. "Student body right. Student body left. And there is just something that is overwhelming to me."
And then, because he's up there in years and got nothing left to prove or worry about, Mac did what Mac does...he told it like it is.
On Tim Brown: "I thought Donnie MacPherson should have won [the Heisman], but I love him now. I really do."
On Penn St. RB Curt Warner: "Third-and-1, he’s down in the Carrier Dome on our 1. Here's Mr. Sweetheart over here. My linebacker sticks him like he's never been stuck before. Back on third down and 1. Got one more down. He said, nice tackle, kid. Don't go away, I'll be right back."
On Major Harris: "I hated him."
Mac hobnobbed with stars old and new at the Astoria last night. You can watch plenty of free video from the event on SUAthletics.com so head on over and watch Mac do what Mac does best.
