Tonight's game against Colgate is great chance for the Orange to "brush up." Ugh, sorry.
Long story short, if you thought Columbia was a cupcake, wait til you get a load of the winless Raiders. Colgate is coming off a buzzer-beater loss to St. Francis and its been one of those years for them so far. The year began with a loss to UConn and has trickled down ever since.
If you need some players to fear on the Colgate roster because it makes you feel better, I'll give you two:
Senior Kyle Roemer (18.4 ppg) and sophomore Yaw Gyawu (15.8 ppg) are Colgate’s two top scorers. They have combined to lead the team in scoring in four of the team’s five games. Gyawu has two 20-point performances on his resume this season, including 22 in the St. Francis loss.
According to CuseOrange, the Syracuse big men should shine this evening...
The Raiders won’t overwhelm you with scoring, nor will they with their size. Their leading rebounders average 4.4 boards a game and haven’t had a player taller than 6′6″ start a game. One of the most frustrating things about this SU team, for all their defensive dominance and balanced scoring, has been how bad they’ve looked on the glass at times. The team’s center, Arinze Onuaku is averaging only 3.8 rebounds per game, and the team hasn’t dominated the category in a game like most of us hoped (or assumed) it would. This is an opportunity on a silver platter to right that ship and assert its inside dominance.
Brian over at Orange44 puts it in much more eloquent terms:
The simple facts are that Colgate is a bunch of somewhat tall white guys who played basketball in high school and somehow got offered a scholarship. They haven’t won against Syracuse in like 40 years.
1962 was the last time Colgate won (Jim Boeheim was in high school) and Syracuse leads the all-time series 116-45. No reason to think things don't continue this way. The real question is, who'll be the stat king tonight?
