Everybody's working for the weekend
Everybody wants a little romance
Everybody's goin' off the deep end
Everybody needs a second chance
oh
You want a piece of my heart
You better start from start
You wanna be in the show
Come on baby lets go
-Loverboy
If one stanza from a 80's pop tune could encapsulate the Syracuse men's basketball team this weekend, this is probably it (especially the part about romance ...I'm looking at you Kristof!). Hopes of a little love will have to wait as the Pittsburgh Panthers (20-8, 8-7) come to town on Saturday. The Orange have been playing "must-win" basketball games for about three weeks now so nothing really changes here.
The Orange have lost their last two games, both on the road, so it will be welcoming to be back in the cozy confines of the Dome. But that's where we come in. This needs to be the best crowd of the season, the boys are gonna need it. The hobbled Panthers have struggled on the road with six of their eight losses having come away from Pittsburgh.
If Jim Boeheim was saving his Braveheart speech for a specific time this year, this would be it. Sans facepaint, I hope.
But what of Syracuse's ranked teams? The women's basketball team will take on a mighty challenge when they head to Piscataway to take on the #4 Rutgers (23-4, 13-1) on Saturday. Their coach, Vivian Stringer, won her 800th game as a head coach the other day. A win for the Orange not only keeps her there but also solidifies the Orange's case for a good seed in the NCAAs.
The 4th-ranked women's lacrosse machine take on No. 2 Virginia on Saturday in a huge showdown with major implications for the program. A win here likely bumps the Orange up to #2 in the country and puts them in a position to contend with Northwestern for NCAA title expectations.
Don't forget about men's lax, all they're doing is getting set to play against #3 Virginia in the Face-Off Classic ion Saturday. It's a revenge game for the Orange who need this win to prove they are back to being an elite team. Even a close loss makes a point here, but you know what they say about "close."
Need to plan your game-watching/listening accordingly? Use this to get ready. Now GO! GO! GO!
