We're all so concerned with the current state of Syracuse basketball and what next year is going to look like, that it's a wonder anyone has time to concern themselves with the guys who aren't even here yet. I don't often take a look at the recruits before they get here but I thought it was as good a time as ever to see how they are all progressing:
James Southerland, 6-7, F, Notre Dame Prep (Fitchburg, Mass.): Southerland had 11 points and nine rebounds in a 79-77 victory against New Hampton on Thursday.
Very nice.
Mookie Jones, 6-6, F, Peekskill: Peekskill was off last week. The Red Devils will face Panas today in the Section 1 Class A boys semifinals.
Playoffs! Exciting.
Kris Joseph, 6-7, F, Archbishop Carroll (Washington, D.C.): Joseph scored a game-high 21 points as Carroll topped Good Counsel 65-55 in the quarterfinals of the Washington Catholic Association Conference playoffs on Saturday. Joseph's 19 points weren't enough in a 68-57 semifinal loss to Gonzaga on Sunday.
Tough break but I like the numbers. So far, everyone looks on point and there's no reason for any kind of concern. I probably should have waited until I've looked at every recruit before saying that but I'm sure there won't be any problems.
Dion Waiters, 6-2, G, South Kent Prep (South Kent, Conn.): Suspended through the end of the season for conduct detrimental to the team.

Whatwhatwhat-WHAT?
Syracuse University recruit Dion Waiters has been suspended from the South Kent (Conn.) Prep School basketball team through the end of the season for conduct detrimental to the team, according to South Kent athletic director Owen Finberg...Waiters, a 6-foot-2 sophomore guard, is still attending classes but it is unknown whether he will return to the school and the team next season.
No word on exactly what he did so I don't know if we're talking about cheating on a test, getting into a fight or making a snuff film (the last one only really being detrimental to the team if the focus of the film was a teammate). South Kent's Syracuse University-like grip on the facts has forbade any facts from leaking out so we'll just have to take their word for it when Waiters shows up in a few years that everything got sorted out. I guess.
