Out of the Friar's Pan...

First things first. Look at this gentleman on the left here. I ask you, is he:

A) A rapist with a penchant for wearing women's clothing

B) The Unabomber, in happier times when he wasn't yet beaten down by a life of murdering people with bombs via the Postal Service.

C) The Providence Friar

The answer, of course, is...A.

Now that we've gotten that out of the way, we 're free to discuss this weekend's solid victory for the Cuse over Providence 71-67. I don't know if its because of the spotty low-post play, the lack of trust in our point guard at times or just because we've gotten so used to waiting for a scrappy white guy to save us from beyond the arc (Cipolla, Janulis, McNamara...), but I find it truly absurd that I find myself watching Syracuse games now and telling myself over and over, "Get it to Rautins, Get it to Rautins, Get it to Rautins." Demetris Nichols scored 18 points and Eric Devendorf scored 14 but it really seems like we've gotten to the point where when we need a spark or need a big play, Rautins has incredulously become the go-to guy, hence his 19 point performance on Saturday. I see I'm not alone in thinking this.

The gutty win for the Orange puts them at 20-8 and apparently, back into the good graces of Bracketologists everywhere. Joe Lunardi gave Cuse the back-handed compliment of a 12-seed in his latest bracket. Of course, tonight's game is going to go a long way in determining if Mr. Lunardi was right to put us back in his good graces.

Elsewhere, someone forgot to tell Georgetown its 2007, not 1987. They officially own the Big East again, much to the chagrin of Pitt fans. Notre Dame put the screws to Marquette, who are fading fast. Seems like only yesterday they were a sexy Big East tourney pick. St. Johns, thanks for showing up against Duke, we'd appreciate it if you'd keep the JV team on the bench next time.
